An essential element to the Alternative Schools Network (ASN) is its role in violence prevention. 19 years ago, ASN developed a basketball league as an after-school activity that would resonate with high school student athletes while achieving ASN's goal to get youth off the streets and reduce their exposure to violence.
Today the program has grown into an effective violence prevention vehicle with 22 of 24 ASN member alternative high schools participating in the league and attracting more than 180 student athletes each year, of which 89% are young, at-risk males who had been out-of-school and re-enrolled in an alternative high school.
